Sea & Learn on Statia

For over 20 years, the Sea & Learn Foundation (SLF) has ignited environmental awareness with its dynamic month-long “Sea & Learn” program on Saba. Now, with Saba and Statia sharing close ties, rich natural resources, and similar environmental challenges, the SLF is thrilled to bring this successful initiative to Statia as well. In 2023, the SLF, in collaboration with STENAPA and WWF Dutch Caribbean, launched a groundbreaking pilot program on the island. With Statia facing new developments and ongoing challenges like erosion, deforestation, invasive seagrasses, and coral disease, it’s more important than ever to learn what we can do to combat these threats to our island’s biodiversity.

The program offers something for everyone: exciting citizen science activities that engage youth, adults, and tourists, and enriching knowledge exchange sessions with the island’s elders. Picture this—dynamic presentations held in relaxed, inviting settings, tailored to fit the schedules of both locals and visitors. By diving into hands-on marine and terrestrial activities, community members transform into citizen scientists, contributing to essential data collection that makes a real impact.

Sea & Learn will return to Statia October 29th to November 1st, with this year’s spotlight on the fascinating movement patterns of reef-dwelling sharks (Erwin Winter) and health of sea turtles (Kimberly Stewart). These captivating creatures are not only favorites of divers, but are also crucial players in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem.

Stay tuned for the full lineup of events—coming soon!
