The Sea & Learn Foundation has developed an ongoing, sustained program focusing on the 6th grade students at Sacred Heart School on Saba, called “Science SEAkers”, with each month of the school year being dedicated to different focus areas within NEPP. To complement each activity, SLF creates interactive worksheets for the students to fill out afterwards. At the end of the school year, the kids will have an activity “notebook” to take home with them. The goal is to reuse these same worksheets year after year (with additions based on activities) to provide a more comprehensive science curriculum tailored to Saba’s nature.

The 2023-2024 students visited Saba’s waste management facility, picked up trash and made artwork from it, toured the hydroponics farm and started growing their own micro greens, took to the trail to find seeds of the West Indian Almond to later plant as part of Public Entity Saba's reforestation project, observed how scientists at the Saba Research Center determine the age and sex of a fish and how these key indicators are important for sustainable fishing practices, learned the biology of the reef’s lawnmowers and how keeping algae in check helps coral communities thrive, and snorkeled Saba's reefs to take in different vantage points of Saba and witnessed cumulative/compounding environmental impacts from a different perspective—coastal erosion, the waste management facility, forested areas vs. areas depleted by overgrazing.

Stay tuned for the 2024-2025 activities!
