Critter Quest

Teams of scientists are scheduled to be on Saba from January through March 2025 to set up a baseline assessment of Saba’s insects and other invertebrates, essential for understanding overall ecosystem biodiversity and health. Public presentations and hands-on activities will be coordinated by the Sea & Learn Foundation during these months. Due to the island’s diverse terrain, the field research will cover various climate zones, enabling the discovery of unique and potentially new species in each zone. This experience will expand participants’ sense of adventure beyond the typical hiking trails, offering a broader perspective of exploration through a number of BioBlitzes.

What’s a bioblitz you may ask? Good question!
A bioblitz is a biological inventory or biological census. The primary goal of a BioBlitz is to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live in a place.
Why participate? Another great question!
1. Contribute to Citizen Science
Bioblitzes help collect important data on biodiversity, contributing to scientific research and conservation efforts.
2. Learn and Explore
Participants gain hands-on experience with local wildlife and plants, learning from experts and fellow enthusiasts.
3. Community Engagement
It’s a great way to connect with others who have similar interests and to engage with your local community.
4. Raise Awareness
Bioblitzes raise awareness about biodiversity and environmental issues, fostering a greater appreciation for nature.
5. Fun and Adventure
The event can be a fun, adventurous activity for individuals and families alike, offering a unique way to spend time outdoors.
